Projects

We try to stay busy at the CFBO! Here is some of what we have going on.

Migration Banding Stations

Our organization’s migration banding takes place at two locations: Fort Fisher State Recreation Area and The Nature Conservancy’s Black River Preserve in Bladen County, NC. Through this work we aim to track which species travel through the area, and when. This project allows us to research, teach, and connect with the public.

Painted Bunting Demographics

We are working to build a network of local collaborators to monitor Painted Buntings in coastal North Carolina. We are interested in learning more about local abundance of Painted Buntings as well as their nesting ecology and overwintering behavior. Do you live in coastal NC and have regular visits from Painted Buntings at your feeder during the winter months? Contact us, we’d like to know!

Wilmington Youth Birding

We believe that one of the most effective ways to promote environmental awareness is to help kids get hands-on experiences in nature. This belief inspired us to create Wilmington Youth Birding, a budding program where we and our excellent volunteers go on nature walks with kids!

North Carolina Hummingbirds

Additionally, the CFBO is the new home of hummingbird research in North Carolina. This long-term endeavor that was begun in 1999 by Susan Campbell will now be operated through the observatory. The move should allow for greater visibility of the various aspects of this endeavor. Hopefully, the scope of Susan's research will broaden significantly as a result of increased support. You can learn more at Susan's website.
